On August 4, 2025 residents of Executive Towers in Toledo contacted LAWO after receiving alarming notices to vacate their homes within days. LAWO quickly mobilized with community partners and hosted a tenants’ rights meeting the next evening. After public pressure and media attention, the vacate notice was rescinded.

Through recent Right to Counsel housing legislation passed in Toledo, LAWO has protected numerous individuals and families against unfair evictions so that they may stay safely in their homes. Here’s how we helped Paula, a mother of three children, improve her family’s rental housing conditions.

Phillip Major* and his spouse, the parents of three minor children, were both employed as independent contractors with a company that sold fixed rate utility bill plans door-to-door. Mr. Major and his spouse both lost their jobs as a result of the COVID-19 shut-down and fell behind on their rent.

Tenants with housing and debt collection actions in the Municipal Court have onsite access to LAWO’s services.

There are funds available to help tenants pay any rent they owe to their landlords which will ensure their landlords are made whole.
