Work Requirements for Medicaid

The federal government has granted permission for Ohio to create a work requirement for Medicaid. The food stamp program (SNAP) has a work requirement. However, Ohio has never had a work requirement for Medicaid. Ohio is in the process of creating rules that will require participants to work or volunteer for at least 20 hours a week to be eligible for benefits. The work requirement can be waived for the following individuals:

  1. Age 50 and older
  2. Taking care of a Parent
  3. Individuals with a chronic condition
  4. Individuals who qualify for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Able-bodied Adults without Dependents (ABAWD) programs
  5. Other good cause https://medicaid.ohio.gov/Portals/0/Press%20Releases/Work-Community-Engagement-Requirements.pdf
