Patricia Y. Hernández (Patty) brings over 25 years of experience in civil legal services to her role as Acting Executive Director of Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. (LAWO), which she assumed on November 1, 2025. She is a respected advocate, mentor, and national leader in community lawyering whose career reflects a deep commitment to client-centered, equity-focused legal work.
Before becoming Acting Executive Director, Patty served as LAWO’s Director of Advocacy since December 2022. In that position, she guided litigation strategy, strengthened community partnerships, and oversaw statewide advocacy efforts that protect and advance the rights of low-income individuals and families. She is known for creating supportive, collaborative environments where staff feel empowered to lead and innovate.
Prior to directing LAWO’s advocacy work, Patty spent five years managing the agricultural workers program, where she led a team that provided outreach, education, and legal representation to farmworkers across Ohio. Under her leadership, the program expanded workplace protections, improved access to essential services, and amplified the voices of agricultural workers at local, state, and national levels.
Patty previously dedicated more than two decades to Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE) where she practiced in several areas of poverty law. Her work included civil rights, education, immigration, employment, language access, and community economic development. This broad experience gives her a comprehensive understanding of the systemic barriers facing low-income communities and a clear vision for how legal aid can advance meaningful change.
Recognized nationally for her expertise in community lawyering, Patty has trained attorneys and advocates throughout the country on models that build long-term, trust-based partnerships with clients and community organizations. Her leadership style is steady, inquisitive, and grounded in compassion. She is deeply committed to ensuring that LAWO’s work reflects the priorities and lived experiences of the communities it serves.
Patty is the first Latina to lead LAWO in its over 70-year history.
